These are related but different problems. A dryer that shuts off mid-cycle is one where the safety system is working — it detected overheating and cut power as designed. A dryer that is overheating but still running has a safety system that hasn’t yet tripped — or one that has degraded and is allowing the machine to continue operating above safe temperatures. The overheating-but-running scenario is more immediately dangerous because the machine is not protecting itself.

How Thermostats and Temperature Sensors Control Dryer Heat

Most residential dryers use two or three thermal control components working in sequence. Understanding their roles helps explain why overheating takes specific diagnostic forms.

The cycling thermostat is the primary temperature regulator during normal operation. It opens and closes a circuit to the heating element as the drum temperature rises and falls, maintaining heat within the designed range. When the cycling thermostat fails in the closed position — meaning it never signals the element to switch off — the heating element runs continuously. The drum keeps getting hotter with every passing minute. Clothes bake rather than dry. The cabinet exterior becomes hot to the touch. The high-limit thermostat is a backup safety device that trips if the drum temperature exceeds a fixed maximum — typically around 250–300°F depending on the model. Unlike the cycling thermostat, the high-limit thermostat is a one-time device on many models: once it trips, it must be replaced. A tripped high-limit thermostat often indicates that the cycling thermostat was already failing and allowed temperatures to reach dangerous levels. Replacing only the high-limit thermostat without addressing the underlying cycling thermostat failure will result in the high-limit tripping again.

Some newer Samsung, LG, and Bosch models use a thermistor (temperature sensor) rather than or in addition to bimetal thermostats. A thermistor reports drum temperature continuously to the control board. A failed thermistor can cause the board to misread actual temperature and allow overheating without triggering a protective shutdown. When to Stop Using an Overheating Dryer

An overheating dryer is not a minor inconvenience — it is a fire hazard. Lint accumulates throughout the dryer cabinet, in the exhaust duct, and around the heating element. At normal operating temperatures, this lint is stable. At elevated temperatures, it can ignite.
